A federal judge has ordered Juan “N” to stand trial for his alleged role in an armed attack in Celaya, Guanajuato, that killed one National Guard (GN) officer and left another seriously wounded, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) announced. The ruling was made public on October 30, 2026, more than a year after the incident, which took place on October 11, 2025.

  • Charges: Juan “N” faces charges of aggravated homicide with premeditation and treachery, in the form of ambush, as well as attempted aggravated homicide.
  • Pre-trial detention: The judge imposed mandatory pre-trial detention, meaning the suspect will remain at the Federal Social Readaptation Center No. 17 in Michoacán.
  • Investigation timeline: A three-month period was set for the conclusion of the supplementary investigation.
  • Prior suspect: Cristian “G” was already ordered to trial in December 2025 in the same case, identified as the co-rider of the motorcycle used by the attackers.

Arrest and evidence presented by the FGR

Federal Ministerial Police officers executed an arrest warrant for Juan “N” in Celaya, the municipality where the attack occurred. During the hearing, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office presented the evidence that led to the trial order.

The judge also ruled that the suspect remain in the federal prison in Michoacán under mandatory pre-trial detention while the prosecution gathers further evidence to support its case.

The attack on Constituyentes Avenue

The assault occurred at around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2025, on the elevated bridge of Constituyentes Avenue, near the El Cantar neighborhood and close to the Celaya Central Market.

The two federal officers were riding a motorcycle patrol when armed men on another motorcycle caught up with them. The attackers opened fire and fled after the shooting.

The slain officer was identified as Uriel “N”, a National Guard member conducting surveillance in the area. His female partner was also struck by bullets and taken to the Celaya Regional Hospital, where she remained in critical condition due to the severity of her injuries.

Following the attack, the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation to clarify the sequence of events and determine the motive. Initial proceedings included the collection of shell casings and processing of the crime scene.

The other suspect and the case’s proceedings

Juan “N” is not the first person prosecuted in this case. On December 2, 2025, the FGR announced it had obtained a trial order for Cristian “G”, identified as the co-rider of the motorcycle carrying the alleged attackers.

The Attorney General’s Office said at the time that the investigation file had begun in October of that year, after it received a probe initiated by the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office. The inquiries led to Cristian’s arrest, and he was accused of probable responsibility for aggravated homicide and attempted aggravated homicide.

In that ruling, the judge also imposed mandatory pre-trial detention and set two months for the supplementary investigation. The suspect was sent to the same federal prison in Michoacán.

The state investigation into the attack included field forensic work, ballistic analysis through the IBIS system, witness interviews and review of video recordings to reconstruct the movements of the alleged perpetrators. Information released by Guanajuato authorities in December 2025 linked those proceedings to the identification and capture of Cristian “N”.

The Attorney General’s Office did not specify in its statement what role Juan “N” allegedly played during the attack. The suspect must be presumed innocent until a judicial authority issues a conviction.

With this new trial order, the case now has two individuals facing criminal proceedings for the attack that killed a National Guard officer in Celaya. The three-month deadline set by the judge will be crucial for the Public Prosecutor’s Office to consolidate evidence and formalize charges, in a file that combines state and federal proceedings and keeps scrutiny on violence against security forces in Guanajuato.
