Citlalli Hernández Mora, who heads Morena's National Elections Commission, answered sharply on X to a post by PRI national leader Alejandro Moreno praising Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos. The exchange unfolds as the PRI and PAN weigh an electoral alliance for the 2027 Chihuahua governorship.

  • The trigger: Moreno praised Campos as "a woman of character" and called for going "all out for Chihuahua."
  • The reply: Hernández said both are bound by "treason to the homeland" and "subordination to interventionist interests."
  • The backdrop: The PRI and PAN are pursuing a joint 2027 candidacy while the CIA agents case keeps Chihuahua and the federal government at odds.

Moreno's praise for Maru Campos

In his post, the PRI leader wrote that he was very pleased to greet the state governor in Chihuahua, describing her as "a woman of character, with political experience, leadership and a deep commitment to her state." He also acknowledged her work at the head of the government and her ability to "bring people together, listen and build agreements from plurality," closing with a call: "Let's go all out for Chihuahua!"

According to what was published, the PRI leader attended the second report of Alejandro Domínguez, the party's state leader and a federal lawmaker, in Chihuahua's capital. Moreno shared images from the event showing Campos in the front row alongside PRI members.

Citlalli Hernández's response

The reply came from Citlalli Hernández Mora, who chairs Morena's National Elections Commission. On X she wrote that what "treason to the homeland" and "subordination to interventionist interests" have joined "no one can separate." She added that neither "the ridicule they make of themselves" nor "the contempt they generate among the people" will divide them, ending with: "Two of a kind! One for the other."

The message did not specify which concrete events the phrase "interventionist interests" refers to.

The PRI-PAN alliance and the CIA case

During his visit, Moreno said he would seek a meeting with the governor to discuss a PRI-PAN alliance ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election. He noted permanent communication between both parties and said the goal is for Marco Bonilla to be their common candidate for governor. On his relationship with Campos, the PRI leader spoke of "institutional respect and affection," adding that before being PRI or PAN members, one must be Chihuahuan and Mexican, and "close ranks with the governor." No definitive agreements between the two parties have been announced so far.

The exchange comes amid tension between Chihuahua's government and the federal government over the CIA agents case. According to reports, in April 2026 four CIA agents allegedly took part in dismantling a suspected drug lab in the Sierra Tarahumara. Two of them died along with two officials.

The main points of the case:

  • The Attorney General's Office (FGR) summoned Maru Campos to testify, and she appeared in Mexico City on May 27.
  • Campos said she was unaware of direct foreign personnel involvement, while her then prosecutor, César Jáuregui, acknowledged knowing of that collaboration and later resigned.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum denied any political persecution and maintained it is an investigation into the presence of foreign agents.
  • On October 22, Sheinbaum declined to comment on possible responsibility by the governor, saying her remarks "speak for themselves" and that it is up to the FGR to determine whether there are grounds to investigate.

Campos has maintained the case aims to harm her politically. Morena, for its part, has pushed impeachment requests and marches against her, while the PAN has rejected those accusations.

This is not the first clash between Hernández and Moreno over the state. Weeks ago, the Morena figure mocked the PAN and its leader, Jorge Romero, over trends ahead of the Chihuahua race. Moreno responded that they "will win Chihuahua" in 2027 and claimed that, combined, PAN and PRI far outpace Morena.

Chihuahua is one of the states where the political map toward 2027 will be defined. The coming weeks will be marked by the announced meeting between Moreno and Campos to advance the alliance, the definition of the common candidacy in the PRI-PAN bloc, the evolution of the FGR investigation into the presence of CIA agents, and Morena's strategy to wrest the governorship from the PAN. So far, neither Maru Campos nor the PRI have publicly responded to Citlalli Hernández's message.
