Mexican television presenter Inés Gómez Mont was arrested on Friday in Miami, Florida, after spending several years as a fugitive from Mexican justice. She faces arrest warrants for organized crime, operations with resources of illicit origin, embezzlement and tax fraud, charges tied to the alleged diversion of public funds.

  • Arrest in the United States: the author of the book Ley de fuego was located by authorities in Miami, Florida, after remaining beyond the reach of Mexican justice.
  • Charges against her: the Attorney General's Office (FGR) accuses her of organized crime, money laundering, embezzlement and tax fraud.
  • Possible sentence: if she is bound over for trial and found guilty, she could receive up to 40 years in prison for organized crime alone, plus penalties for the other charges.

The charges she faces

According to the prosecution, Inés Gómez Mont faces allegations of organized crime, operations with resources of illicit origin and embezzlement, linked to the suspected diversion of public resources through a network of companies. The highest penalty corresponds to the first charge, which alone carries up to 40 years behind bars, to which sanctions for money laundering, embezzlement and tax fraud would be added.

The arrest also involves her husband, Víctor Álvarez Puga, and his brother, Alejandro Álvarez Puga. All three had been fugitives since the warrants requested by the FGR were issued.

Two fronts opened by the capture

The arrest of Gómez Mont opens two scenarios. The first concerns her immigration and judicial status in the United States. The second is the formal request that Mexico must file for her extradition so she can appear before a federal judge, who will determine her legal situation.

The FGR announced in January 2022 that it had opened an investigation file in November 2019 against Inés Gómez Mont, her husband Víctor Álvarez Puga, other individuals and several companies for their probable participation in organized crime and operations with resources of illicit origin.

The company network and contracts under scrutiny

The FGR investigation points to a network that allegedly simulated commercial operations and used tax receipts to hide the origin and destination of the funds. The prosecution maintains that the contracts were related to the Administrative Organ for Prevention and Social Readaptation of the Secretariat of the Interior (Segob).

The scheme allegedly included invoices for services that, according to the prosecution, were never performed. The FGR states that the main organization was headed by Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga and Inés Gómez Mont. That accusation must still be proven in court, as there is no final ruling declaring the presenter guilty.

The arrest warrants issued in Mexico remain in force, according to reports published during October 2026. The cancellation of an Interpol red notice does not by itself annul an order issued by a Mexican judge.

The case now moves toward defining her legal status in the United States and, in parallel, toward the extradition process that Mexico must formalize. While no sentence exists, the presumption of innocence remains, but the arrest places the case at a decisive stage to determine whether the former presenter will face trial on Mexican soil.
