A mother and her three-year-old son were shot dead on the night of Sunday, November 1, while riding a scooter through the intersection of Peñón and Tenochtitlán streets in the Morelos neighborhood, Cuauhtémoc borough, during Day of the Dead celebrations. The victims were identified as Sharon “N” and the child Marvin “N”.

  • Key Point: A woman and her three-year-old son were fatally shot on the night of November 1 in the Morelos neighborhood, Cuauhtémoc borough.
  • Context: The child was wearing a costume at the time of the attack, apparently intending to ask for “calaverita.”
  • Investigation: The attackers fled on an electric bicycle; SSC-CDMX is reviewing surveillance footage to locate them.

The attack and the authorities’ response

The Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC-CDMX) reported that its officers responded to a call about two people injured by gunfire at the Peñón and Tenochtitlán intersection. Upon arrival, neighbors told them the wounded had been taken to a hospital by their own means.

“Al llegar al lugar, vecinos de la zona informaron que fueron trasladados por sus propios medios a un hospital donde fueron atendidos por personal médico. Posteriormente se notificó su deceso,” the agency stated in its official release.

Unofficially, it was reported that the victims died at Balbuena Hospital. Journalist Tania Aguilar reported that the child was wearing a costume at the time of the attack, apparently intending to ask for “calaverita.”

According to the SSC, the suspected attackers fled on an electric bicycle. Personnel are analyzing surveillance camera footage to identify and locate those responsible. The case was referred to a Public Ministry agent for the corresponding investigations, and both the SSC and the capital’s Attorney General’s Office are searching for the attackers.

The victim’s identity and alleged ties

Reports by communicator Carlos Jiménez, known as C4 Jiménez, identified the woman as “La Pelos,” an alleged extortionist for La Unión Tepito.

Jiménez had previously documented “La Pelos” last July, when he exposed her as an alleged member of a group called Los Paraguayos, linked to La Unión Tepito. According to that report, the woman demanded protection payments from merchants in the Cuauhtémoc and Venustiano Carranza boroughs, accompanied by individuals who used physical violence against those who refused to pay.

Flores had been arrested on a previous occasion but regained her freedom after the victims declined to file a formal complaint with authorities.

Sentence against “El Pozoles,” alleged leader of La Unión Tepito

In a case related to the same criminal organization, Brayan Mauricio Miranda, known as “El Pozoles” and identified by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) as one of La Unión Tepito’s leaders, received a five-year prison sentence for drug possession with intent to distribute. A federal judge handed down the ruling on the same November 1, according to the FGR.

Miranda was arrested in October 2023 by SSC officers while driving a vehicle in the Roma Norte neighborhood. During the inspection, agents found 496.7 grams of marijuana, 538.3 grams of methamphetamine, and 18.6 grams of cocaine, all in plastic bags ready for sale.

The case began in local jurisdiction, but in January 2024 the Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office (FECOR) received the declination of competence and continued the process at the federal level. The oral trial concluded with a conviction of five years in prison, a fine, and forfeiture of the seized drugs.

Before his 2023 arrest, Miranda had already served a sentence in the State of Mexico. After regaining his freedom, he continued operating in extortion, kidnapping, arms trafficking, and drug dealing. In 2024, a second arrest warrant linked him to the disappearance of Brayan Apodaca Quintero, a 28-year-old man he lured out of a meeting in 2016 under the pretext of getting gas, and who has not been heard from since.

The double homicide on Day of the Dead night highlights the persistence of violence in the Tepito and Morelos neighborhood area, where authorities maintain surveillance operations. The SSC and the capital’s Prosecutor’s Office continue their investigations to find those responsible for the attack, while the woman’s identity and her alleged ties to extortion will be central to the inquiries.
