Almost two decades after the ambush that killed Valentín Elizalde, a new documentary series will revisit the case. The production, titled Valentín: La muerte del Gallo de Oro, was announced on Wednesday, October 28, and is set to premiere on HBO Max on November 12, according to a post from the verified account @hbomaxmx. The series promises to bring fresh voices and archival material to the questions that have lingered around the singer's death.

  • Premiere date: The docuseries will debut on HBO Max on November 12.
  • Focus: The project will feature new voices and archives addressing the unresolved questions surrounding the case.
  • The crime: Elizalde died on November 25, 2006, at age 27, in an attack in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, that also killed his manager Mario Mendoza and his driver Reinaldo Vallesteros.

A case still full of questions

The promotional campaign set the tone with a line that highlights the unresolved doubts: “A 20 years after his death, new voices and archives return to the questions surrounding the story of Valentín Elizalde.” The promotion also posed another question about the case file: “What really happened with Valentín Elizalde?”

That question returned to the center of the conversation when the singer's family spoke of documents and lines of investigation that had not been publicly incorporated into the case. The announcement did not specify how many episodes the production will have or identify the people who will participate with testimonies or archival materials.

The series poster shows Elizalde in a black suit with red accents, a cowboy hat and the figure of a golden rooster. The image also includes a pickup truck, an element associated with the singer's final moments and with the ambush in Reynosa.

The expert report that revived family versions

News of the series came months after Francisco Joel and Jesús “El Flaco” Elizalde spoke about an alternative expert report related to their brother's murder. The brothers explained that the technical report was found by their mother, Camila Valencia. The decision to formally request its incorporation into the case fell to the singer's daughters: Valentina, Valeria and Gabriela Elizalde.

Francisco Joel and “El Flaco” maintained that the document's content was known only within the family circle. For that reason, they did not reveal the details of the report or the conclusions it might contain.

The version shared by the relatives added a new dimension to a case file that has accumulated hypotheses over nearly two decades. One of them linked the crime to Los Zetas, an organization that had a presence in Reynosa when the attack occurred.

Jesús “El Flaco” Elizalde offered a different view on the motive. The singer's brother stated that the homicide “would not be a cartel settling of scores, but a crime of passion.”

A premiere days before the death anniversary

The launch is scheduled less than two weeks before the anniversary of Elizalde's death. The attack occurred after a performance at a palenque in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, and also took the lives of his manager Mario Mendoza and his driver Reinaldo Vallesteros.

HBO Max announced that the docuseries would recover “new voices and archives.” That approach opened the possibility that the program will review known testimonies, family documents and versions that have emerged since 2006 around the death of the Sinaloan singer.

The platform presented the project as a “new original documentary series from HBO.” With the premiere set for November 12, the project arrives at a time when the case file still holds family versions, criminal testimonies and expert reports that have not been made public. The docuseries could become a space to organize those pieces and to gauge how much understanding of the case has changed since the night of the ambush.
