Twenty years after the attack that ended the life of singer Valentín Elizalde in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, HBO Max will premiere a documentary series that revisits the least clarified points of the case: the role of his cousin Fausto “Tano” Elizalde, the existence of an expert report kept outside the official investigation, and the family disputes over the performer's estate.

  • Premiere: “Valentín: La muerte del Gallo de Oro” arrives on November 12, 2026, in three episodes airing weekly.
  • The events: in the early hours of November 25, 2006, a commando fired more than 60 high-powered weapon casings at the musician's van as he left the Palenque at the Expo-Feria in Reynosa.
  • The victims: Valentín Elizalde, his manager Mario Mendoza Grajeda, and driver Reynaldo Ballesteros died; “Tano” Elizalde was the only survivor in the vehicle.
  • The legal context: the twentieth anniversary coincides with the deadline for Tamaulipas ministerial authorities to declare the criminal statute of limitations in the case.

The shadow over “Tano” Elizalde

The production, made by Sula Entertainment and Lemon Studios, reconstructs what happened that morning and gathers testimonies that question the singer's cousin's role. Suspicions grew stronger with statements from his ex-wife, Marisol Castro, who claimed that “Tano” showed extreme nervousness in the hours before the performance and pushed to change the work schedule.

According to that account, the artist's office had a date scheduled in Tijuana, but “Tano” insisted on canceling it to go to Reynosa, an area then under the control of the Gulf Cartel and its armed wing, Los Zetas.

“Tano” himself declared in television interviews that during the shooting he did not see the attackers and that he left the scene in a taxi while the bodies of his companions remained inside the Suburban. Direct relatives of the musician questioned that account over the years. Valentina Elizalde, the singer's youngest daughter, stated that her uncle planned the transfers and knew the risks of bringing the performance to that border city.

Inheritance, lawsuits, and a rejected project

The rift between “Tano” and the Elizalde dynasty deepened when the musician confirmed his romantic relationship with Gabriela Sabag, Valentín's only legitimate wife and designated universal executor of his assets and image rights. They announced their engagement in 2021 and formalized their civil union years later, which gave “Tano” access to the administration of the estate and legal authorizations for commercial use of the singer's name.

Fausto “Tano” Elizalde tried to develop his own biographical project under the title “La verdad de mi Tano.” The initiative drew rejection from Camila Valencia, Valentín's mother, and his three daughters, who denounced attempts to profit from the performer's memory without family consent. The new series includes documentary material on these estate disputes that divided the family for more than a decade.

The expert report that never entered the case file

The production also addresses the existence of an alternate technical and expert report that the singer's mother kept privately for years. Brothers Francisco Joel and Jesús “El Flaco” Elizalde revealed that the document contains ballistic and testimonial elements that were never part of the preliminary investigation assembled by ministerial authorities in Tamaulipas.

“El Flaco” Elizalde expuso que las conclusiones de ese expediente privado descartan que el ataque respondiera de forma exclusiva a una confrontación entre organizaciones criminales rivales y abren la línea de un móvil pasional.

The artist's daughters retain the power to decide whether to formally present this evidence before judicial authorities to demand a reopening of the case before the legal statute of limitations expires. They seek to use the testimonies and expert findings gathered for the audiovisual production as a basis to formally request the state prosecutor's office to reopen the investigations.

The official line and the corrido that allegedly triggered the attack

Judicial investigations attributed the homicide to a direct order from members of Los Zetas, mentioning Jaime González Durán, alias “El Hummer,” who operated as a commander of that structure in Reynosa. The main motive in that line points to the performance of the corrido “A mis enemigos”: Elizalde opened and closed his concert at the palenque with that song, whose lyrics contained allusions of support for Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in an area dominated by the opposing side.

González Durán, a former soldier and founder of Los Zetas, was arrested in 2008 by federal authorities in Reynosa and is serving sentences totaling more than 70 years in prison at the Hermosillo federal penitentiary. The Attorney General's Office also at one point linked Raúl Hernández Barrón, known as “El Flander I,” although the ministerial file did not result in firm sentences for the triple homicide at the palenque.

The documentary includes interviews with security specialists and local journalists who covered the crime scene that morning. The three chapters will be available to subscribers starting November 12, 2026.

With the legal clock running against them, the series not only serves as a memory of the case: it also shapes up as a piece the family could use to reactivate an investigation that has gone two decades without definitive answers.
