A prior absence and the transfer to the Panteón Francés

On October 19, Cárdenas Solórzano did not attend the ceremonies for his father's death anniversary in Michoacán. Between October 22 and 27, there were no public appearances or statements from the family.

His body was taken to the Panteón Francés de Legaria. There, a wake was to be held on Thursday, October 29, from 10:00 to 16:00, at the same site where his wife, Celeste Batel, rests.

Political career and final recognitions

Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas was born on May 1, 1934, in Mexico City, the son of Lázaro Cárdenas and Amalia Solórzano. That same year his father assumed the presidency, which he held until 1940. He studied civil engineering at UNAM. Lázaro Cárdenas's government is remembered, among other actions, for the oil expropriation.

In 1987 he left the PRI after leading the Democratic Current. In 1988 he was the candidate of the National Democratic Front in an election that the opposition has called fraudulent. The PRD presented itself as a party in the Zócalo on May 5, 1989.

His electoral trajectory included:

  • 1988, 1994, and 2000: three presidential candidacies.
  • 1997: victory in the first direct election for Head of Government of the Federal District, an office he held until 2000.

In 2020, during the 50th anniversary of Lázaro Cárdenas's death at the Monument to the Revolution, Cuauhtémoc stated that his father was respectful of the opposition despite "visceral" attacks against his government. The event took place in the presence of then-president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The general's remains rest at that monument.

On January 30, 2026, he received an honorary doctorate from the IPN, where he was accompanied by family and friends in front of his father's statue, according to a statement from the institute.

In March 2026, the federal government appointed him president of the Pemex Oil Advisory Commission, his last public office.

On August 10, he gave his last public interview, on Miguel Ángel Mancera's podcast. When asked if he would participate in politics, he replied: "Electorally, no."

President Claudia Sheinbaum described him as "a man of firm principles."

Politicians from different parties also mourned his death. He is survived by his three children.

The disappearance of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas closes one of the most influential trajectories in Mexico's recent political history. His departure from the PRI in 1987 and the founding of the PRD opened a channel for party pluralism that transformed the country's electoral competition. With his death, the Cárdenas family legacy passes to his descendants, while the political system bids farewell to a figure who marked four decades of national public life.
